Job Title: Graduate Design Engineer – Underground Cables
Reporting to: Head of Design – Underground Cables
Business Unit: Omexom Design
Purpose of the Position
To support the design and delivery of underground high-voltage (HV) cable systems by contributing to design tasks, technical assessments, and project coordination. This entry-level role is aimed at recent engineering graduates or early-career engineers keen to develop specialist knowledge in HV/EHV underground cable design within a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Including but not limited to:
Assist in the preparation of design deliverables for HV underground cable projects (typically 33kV and above), including layouts, route profiles, trench sections, and design reports.
Undertake cable sizing, thermal analysis, and route feasibility assessments under supervision.
Support the use of design software including CYMCAP, ELEK, and AutoCAD.
Work collaboratively with senior engineers to ensure compliance with design standards, project specifications, and health and safety requirements.
Contribute to technical reviews and quality assurance processes.
Assist in the preparation of cable calculations, system studies, and drawing mark-ups.
Participate in internal and external design meetings, recording actions and following up on assigned tasks.
Maintain accurate design records and contribute to the preparation of project documentation.
Commit to continual learning and development by actively participating in mentoring, on-the-job training, and relevant CPD activities.

Client representatives
Supplier representatives
Operations Engineers and Site teams

Person Specification
The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and eager to grow within a technical engineering team. A strong foundation in electrical or power systems engineering is expected, along with the ability to communicate effectively and work proactively as part of a team.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline.
A strong interest in underground cable design and power transmission.
Familiarity with engineering principles related to HV power systems (e.g. cable sizing, current rating, insulation coordination).
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, etc.).
Some exposure to AutoCAD or similar design software is advantageous.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong problem-solving abilities and willingness to learn.
Right to work in the UK.
Desirable Criteria
Internship or placement experience in the energy, utilities, or infrastructure sector.
Familiarity with cable rating tools such as CYMCAP or ELEK (training will be provided).
Awareness of UK electrical standards and regulations (e.g. BS EN 50522, IEC 60287).
Enrolled or planning to enrol in a professional institution such as the IET, with a view to attaining IEng or CEng status.
