Job Title: Design Manager
Reporting to: Business Unit General Manager
Role purpose
The Design Manager for the Business Unit will be responsible and accountable for the production, delivery and assurance of protection and control schematics from 11kV up to 400kV and associated LVAC & DC systems.
Responsibilities & Duties
Including but not limited to the following:
- Responsible for the selection of equipment and detailed electrical protection design to
- meet relevant design standards and client requirements.
- Responsible for ensuring the complete design package including the interface design is
- fully approved prior to issue for site installation and commissioning.
- Responsible for the production and approval of Design Intent Documents and Functional
- Design Specifications.
- Responsible for supporting the tendering department ensuing technically compliant and
- most cost-effective solutions are proposed.
- Responsible for the production of design risk assessments for all design solutions.
- Ensure as part of the process all design risks and HAZIDS are identified and controlled and
- ensuring full compliance with current Health and Safety legislation.
- Co-ordinating and attendance at Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with the client.
- Responsible for mentoring and development of less experienced members of the
- engineering design team.
- Responsible for leading a team of engineers in the delivery of projects in line with
- customer requirements, ensuring delivery to programme time and within budget.
- Maintaining consistency of design on each contract by ensuring adherence to all
- company processes and procedures.
- Attend technical meetings with the client as and when required throughout Ireland and the UK

Person Specification
Qualifications and experience
The jobholder must be a motivated self-starter, possessing:
- A relevant third level qualification and / or relevant professional qualification(s).
- A minimum of 6 years design experience in the Electricity Supply industry with a
sound working knowledge of electrical power engineering design principles.
- Fully conversant with the latest Transmission and Distribution standards & technologies.
- Experienced in the specification and design of LVAC and DC systems associated with
High Voltage Substations.
- Experienced in setting and configuration of numerical protection relays.
- Good knowledge of High Voltage Substations Primary Plant up to 400kV.
- Knowledge of HV Substation/Windfarms control systems including IEC 61850
applications.
- Good knowledge of Health & Safety regulations applicable to the design and operation of High Voltage substations.
- Able to take on Lead Design Engineer role and interact and co-ordinate other design
disciplines including primary and civil designers.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to manage and motivate
small design teams.
- A strong and demonstrable commercial awareness coupled with an ability to closely identify opportunities to maximise return while ensuring complete customer satisfaction.
